Day One
Behavioral Objectives:
Tsw recognize names of dinosaurs aeb saying the names of the dinosaur when
show the dinosaur picture or model.
Tsw recognize that their are many different kinds of dinosaurs aeb naming
different characteristics for different dinosaurs.
Procedures:
Introduction: Ttw tell the students that for the next two weeks we will
be studying dinosaurs. She will tell them that the word dinosaur means
terrible lizard. Ttw read Dinosaurs by Gail Gibbons. Ttw point out the
dinosaurs that are mentioned in the book. She will point out the
characteristics of the dinosaurs mentioned in the book.(10 min)
Activity 1: The students will view model dinosaurs. They will learn the
names of at least six dinosaurs. We will discuss if the dinosaur was a
plant eater or a meat eater. Ttw ask the children for particular things
that they know about dinosaurs and what they would like to learn about
dinosaurs using a K-W-L chart. (20 min)
Closure: Ttw ask the children to tell her what is a dinosaur. Ttw ask
the children to name some of the dinosaurs. Ttw tell the children that
today we have started our dinosaur lesson and that tomorrow we will learn
more about dinosaurs. (5 min)
Enrichment: The teacher will read dinosaur rhymes or poems to the
students.
Materials:
Dinosaurs by Gail Gibbons

Evaluation:
Observation, Participation
Day Two
Behavioral Objectives:
Tsw recognize that there are fossils of dinosaurs aeb identifying dinosaurs
by their skeletons.
Procedure
Introduction: Ttw read Dinosaurs are Different by Aliki. Ttw tell the
students that today we will look at dinosaur skeletons and try to
figure out which dinosaur it is. (10 min)
Activity 1 Ttw show the students a piece of fossilized dinosaur bone.
She will pass it around for everyone to see. We will discuss that we know
what dinosaurs look like because paleontologist have found whole
skeletons of dinosaurs. (5 min)
Activity 2 Ttw show the students the dinosaur skeleton model. The
students will use pictures or models of dinosaurs to identify the
skeleton. Ttw label the skeleton. All of the skeletons will be identified
and labeled. (15 min)
Closure: Ttw tell the students that today we have learned about dinosaur
skeletons. We will name the skeletons that we have named. The skeletons
will be displayed in the classroom.
Materials:
Dinosaurs are Different
Dinosaur Skeletons (I found models of skeleton at the dollar store)
Dinosaur Pictures

Evaluation:
Observation, Participation
Day Three
Behavioral Objectives:
Tsw demonstrate an understanding of the earth as it was in the time of the
dinosaurs aeb creating a background for our model dinosaurs.
Procedure:
Introduction: Ttw read Dinosaur for a Day by Jim Murphy. Ttw show the
students pictures of the earth when the dinosaurs lived. She will ask the
students if it looks the same today? (7 min)
Activity 1 Ttw ask the students to brainstorm items that we could make to
show how the earth looked when the dinosaurs lived. Ttw write these on
the board. Ttw give the students construction paper, and craft sticks. Tsw
draw and cut out backgrounds for our dinosaur models. Pictures of different
plants and trees will be available for the children to get ideas. Ttw use
the modeling clay to set up the plants and trees with our model
dinosaurs. (23 min)
Closure: Ttw ask the students what the earth was like when the dinosaurs
lived. She will ask if it is the same way now. Do we have any places in
Louisiana that would resemble how the earth looked.
Materials:
Dinosaur for a Day
Construction Paper
Pictures of Prehistoric Life
Clay
Craft Sticks
Evaluation:
Observation of the plant life drawn, Participation in activity
Day Four
Behavioral Objectives:
Tsw identify dinosaurs as plant eaters and meat eaters aeb labeling
Dinosaurs.
Procedure:
Introduction: Ttw read Dinosaur Time. Ttw discuss that some dinosaurs ate
plants and that some ate meat. (7 min)
Activity 1 Tsw be shown pictures and model of the dinosaurs that ate
plants. Ttw show pictures and models of the dinosaurs that ate meat. We
will look for similarities of the plant eaters, and similarities of the
meat eaters. Ttw point out the size of these dinosaurs, that they stood on
four legs, ask children for other similarities they notice (bony frills,
horns) . That the longest dinosaurs were plant eaters. (10 min)
Activity 2 Tsw be given a page of dinosaurs. They will color and cut out
the dinosaurs. They will sort the pictures of the dinosaurs. They will
sort them into groups, plant eaters & meat eaters. We will label our models
as plant eaters and meat eaters. (13 min)
Closure: Ttw ask the students to name some of the plant eaters. She will
ask the students to name some of the meat eaters.
Materials:
Dinosaur models
Dinosaur pictures
Dinosaur paper
Paper to label models
Colors
Scissors
Dinosaur Time
Evaluation:
Participation in the activity. Observation of the student's sorting and
labeling.
Day Five
Behavioral Objectives:
Tsw identify the size of dinosaurs aeb using 1ft strips to show how the
length of a dinosaur.
Tsw use non-standard measurement to show the length of each dinosaur aeb
using children to measure the length of a dinosaur.
Tsw create a graph showing the lengths of the dinosaurs aeb using a
pre-numbered strip to show the length of their dinosaur.
Procedure:
Introduction: Ttw read Giant Dinosaurs by Erna Rowe. Ttw tell the students
that today we are going to show how big some of the dinosaurs were. (7
min)
Activity 1: The teacher will ask the students to imagine that a dinosaur
was in our classroom. Which dinosaurs from the story would fit in our
classroom. Today we are going to find out how large some of the dinosaurs
were. Ask students to name some of the dinosaurs in the book and tell how
large they were. Ttw take the children into the hall. She will unroll an
adding machine tape that is the length of a Apatosaurus (Brontosaurus). (10
min)
Activity 2 The teacher will take the children outside. Using a helium
balloon the teacher will show the height of different dinosaurs. She
will name the dinosaur and then let the balloon go up that high for the
students to see. We will discuss how tall each dinosaur was in comparison
to items outside. (15 min)
Activity 3 Ttw divide the children into 5 groups of 5 children. She will
give each group a card with a dinosaur name and its length on it, a model
of the dinosaur and a pre-numbered strip. The students will use 1ft strips
to show the length of their dinosaur. After assembling their 1 ft strips,
the children will measure how many children would be needed to be the same
length as the dinosaur. The students will then use their pre-numbered
strip to show the length of their dinosaur. (20 min)
Activity 4 Ttw ask each group to share their dinosaur and how long he was,
and how many children long he was. They will glue their strip to the graph.
(10 min)
Closure: Ttw ask the students using our graph, what was the biggest
dinosaur in our room today. What was the smallest dinosaur. Today we have
learned that dinosaurs were different sizes. (5 min)
Materials:
Giant Dinosaurs
Adding Machine Tape
Helium balloon
Kite string measure to different sizes for dinosaurs

Evaluation:
Accurate use of 1ft strips to show dinosaur lengths. Observation,
participation
Day Six
Behavioral Objectives:
Tsw recognize how fossils were made aeb creating their own fossils in clay.
Procedure:
Introduction: Ttw read Digging Up Dinosaurs. Today we will talk about what
a paleontologist does. (5 min)
Activity 1 Ttw discuss with the students how the dinosaur bones became
fossils. She will show them a picture of the dinosaur being buried under
the soil. She will show the children her sediment slush to explain the
concept of layers of dirt building up. Ttw discuss the job of a
paleontologist. Ttw tell the students that today we will make a dinosaur
fossil. She will explain that each person will get some clay and a
dinosaur. They are to flatten their clay just a little, then to put their
dinosaur in the clay. Then take the clay out. This clay will be hard on
Monday, we will have a dinosaur fossil. The teacher will demonstrate this
activity. She will then give each child clay and a dinosaur. Using a
toothpick the teacher will put each child's name on his clay. The fossils
will be picked up to harden. We will eat the sediment sludge.(25 min)
Closure Ttw tell the children that today we have made fossils. We will
become paleontologists and find our fossils.
Materials:
Small Dinosaurs
Clay
Toothpick
Dinosaurs
Digging for Dinosaurs
Evaluation:
Observation, participation
Day Seven
Behavioral Objectives:
Tsw learn what a paleontologists does aeb finding their fossils in sand.
Procedure:
Introduction: Ttw read The Magic School Bus in the Time of the Dinosaurs.
(10 min)
Activity 1: The students will be called over in groups of 4 to become
paleontologists. Ttw have hidden the students hardened dinosaur fossils
in a tub of sand. After finding a dinosaur fossil they will go back to
their desks and draw the dinosaur they have found and write his name They
can use the model or the books. The other students who have not had a turn
yet will have the opportunity to view various dinosaur books. All of the
students will be given a chance to be paleontologists. Dinosaur music
will be playing in the background. After everyone has had their turn and
drawn and labeled their find, the fossils will be returned to their owners.
Ttw walk around and make sure the students have correctly labeled their
fossils.(20 min)
Closure: Ttw thank the owners of the fossil. She will ask the students how
it felt to become paleontologists. She will ask some of the students to
share their finds.(5 min)
Materials:
Tub of sand
23 fossils
paint brush
Evaluation:
Students labeling of their fossil finds. Participation
Day Eight
Behavioral Objectives:
Tsw demonstrate an understanding of why the dinosaurs died out aeb telling
how the earth is different today.
Procedure:
Introduction: Ttw explain the dinosaurs died out 175 million years ago. Long
before there was people on earth.(2 min)
Activity 1 Ttw discuss with the students some of the popular theories about
why the dinosaurs died out. She will explain that some people believe a
large asteroid hit the earth. This made so much dust that the sun was
blocked and that the plants died, so the dinosaurs didn't have any plants
to eat. The meat eating dinosaurs had no dinosaurs to eat so they all died
out. Some people believe that the earth became to cold. Some people
believed that the earth became to dry. No one knows for sure, why the
dinosaurs died out. (15 min)
Activity 2 Tsw role play the lack of food of the dinosaurs. They will
pretend to be plant and meat eating dinosaurs. They will demonstrate
how the dinosaurs would have died out. (15 min)
Closure: Ttw ask the students why they believe the dinosaurs died out.
(3 min)
Materials:
Evaluation:
Teacher observation and participation in role playing.
